Amorphia’s literal definition is free of form, we most certainly live up to the name. The group plays everything from rock, blues and jazz to reggae, funk, hip-hop and improvisational jams. We play all original material, providing a new flavor with a familiar feel, music that can appeal to everyone. Imagine taking the essence of your favorite classic rock groups combine that with the elements of technology and modern musical flavors and run it through a mill of root music and you end up with something slightly similar to what Amorphia is attempting to create. Amorphia was formed in December of 2001 in Newark, Ohio. The band is a six-piece fusion of music consisting of rhythm and lead guitarists, two bassists, one alternating on keyboards and of course, drums and percussion. We also picked up a DJ just recently. After coming together in December Amorphia wrote, organized and rehearsed their material in traditional “college-cram” fashion. A little more than a month later the group took part in the “Exposure” battle of the bands held at Columbus’ Newport Music Hall on N. High Street. Amorphia earned the headlining position by selling the most tickets and went on to beat out 30 other acts in the greater Columbus area. It was Amorphia’s first gig. The prize for the show was 26 hours of recording time and an opening spot for a national recording act, courtesy of Concerts First Promotion. We collected the studio time and utilized it to create our fourteen-track “Nature” demo in two short days. However, despite several persistent phone-calls, we never received the opening position we were promised. Ahhh the music business, it is such the honest and open-minded industry. On that note, Amorphia mailed over 40 copies of their diverse “Nature” demo to various major and independent labels, with only one response. Island Records called us about 5 days after our big “mail-out”. However, they were calling to show interest in us, if and only if we molded our material closer to the Hoobastank/Incubus feel. So we opted to remain poor as opposed to biting. You see, unfortunately most industry A&R big wig’s refuse to open any unsolicited material. Meaning, regardless of talent or substance, if you don’t have a friend of a friend in the business or a fistful of cash, don’t plan on having your voice heard. Thus, it’s far easier for a wealthy kid in California, with little to no talent, to score a major label deal than an experienced and gifted player in the Midwest, who simply lacks the connections and/or the financial support needed to successfully shop an act to the industry. Amorphia happens to see this as the major disadvantage of the music industry today. It creates a constant lack of talent and makes it that much harder for creative artists to immerge. Amorphia is constantly writing new material and are currently wrapping up their second demo album, titled “Sound”. Since the contest, the band has kept busy gigging locally. Amorphia has appeared at Marietta College, the Sparta, Brews, Static, Winfield K’s, OU, Windsors Nightclub in the Ramada, Limey Louie’s as well as some private opportunities around the area. We are looking to expand our gig range and would love to have the opportunity to gain more exposure.
