Description:
The origin of this project was created through an idea of a drummer(Sonnie) and a percussionist(JAO) reuniting after two years in October 2009. After distributing musician ads upon the Internet, an immediate response was received. These responses brought together a group of musicians with such rhythmic chemistry and a dynamic passion to create a unique sound. The musical interpretation, which is melodically performed through various rhythmic transitions, gives rise to a new genre for this ensemble. Seven musicians united to create the Saphila Soul project. Saphila Soul derives from from our geographical backgrounds; Sa represents San Antonio, phila represent Philadelphia and Soul presents the deep musical passion each member brings from the heart. The chemistry of this unique ensemble is expressed by Saphila Soul interpretation of true instrumentation of their melodic tone.
Sonnie D Gregory, Jr(ghosti) originally from Philadelphia, PA with 34 years of experience on Drums. Now a resident of San Antonio and brings a soulful rudimental articulated technique and influence by Lenny White, Billy Cobham and Harvey Mason.
Jose A Olivares(JAO) from Laredo, TX with 5 years of experience as a Percussionist. Now a resident of San Antonio and contributing a heavy Latin influence with melodic rudimental patterns. Influence by Tito Puente, Poncho Sanchez and Mongo Santamaria.
Gerald Ramacharan(GRam) originally from Philadelphia, PA with 33 years of experience as a Bassist. Now a resident of San Antonio and bring forth a highly articulated melodic style and techniques. Influence by Jaco, Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller.
Don Siemens originally from California with 30 years of experience as a Guitarist. Now a resident of San Antonio and bring excellent melodic chords and rhythm, which create a unique instrumentation. Influence by Pat Matheny, Jean Luc Ponty and John Coltrane.
Rene Ford originally from Detroit, MI with over 35 years as a Tenor and Soprano Saxophonist. Now a resident of San Antonio and bring a strong collaboration of improvisation with searing melodic tones of jazz influence through a vibrant instrumentation through many influences.
John Montoya is a San Antonio resident with15 years of experience as a Percussionist. John has a strong Latin percussive influence with a unique technique through instrumentation and collaboration. Influence by Tito Puente, Poncho Sanchez and Chano Pozo.
