Description:
Coming straight out of the sometimes left out Chesapeake, VA, Malcolm Smalls has built a very good reputation from his music. Only 18, Smalls is known for his slick lyrics over his bass-filled "pop beats", created to keep the floor moving at all times. He sings, produces, raps, and even does a bit of graphic designing. He's known for considering himself as a "pop-rapper", which is mostly used in a negative manner, but instead he wants to use it to his advantage. Speaking from the mind of blacks stuck in tha burbz, Smalls may easily be the future of Hip-Hop.
After moving from New Jersey to Virginia at a young age, Smalls was always very talented. Even at a younger age he knew he wanted to be in the entertainment industry, being quoted as saying "I wanted to be a wrestler at first, I used to dress up as Sabu and put a towel over my head, I even had the pants." Later on, however, his career paths changed drastically when he was put on to Jay-Z, and wrote his first rap lyrics at the tender age of 8.
From that point on he was set in the music industry, even joining the band where he played the alto and baritone saxophone. Being inspired by the local Virginians [mainly the Neptunes], Smalls began to pick up cheap Casio keyboards to bang melodies out on, even though he didn't even know what a sequencer was. In his later years, he began producing on Fruity Loops at the age 14, taking his music process to another level. He was known for his versatility, to be able to make hard-hitting grimey tracks to heartfelt R&B compositions. He has been recording songs since December 22, 2004.
Along with producing, rapping, and singing he also dwells into the world of photography and design. From making his own album covers, he has learned the basic steps in photoshop and wishes to indulge in fashion design. He also has a desire for directing movies and even screenwriting. "An auteur, I want to treat my music like directors and actors treat their projects. To spend hours and months just to develop and embellish themselves into their character or work. I wish more artists would have this approach, rather than let me get a few beats and I'll rap or sing on various topics. Album sales are down for a reason. Everything sounds thoughtless, just a bunch of songs thrown on a disc.
