Description:
The Brisbanes are an eclectic five-piece music group from Kansas City, and have been together since the fall of 2005. The band brings in a fresh and enthusiastic perspective on the modern music scene, spanning the musical landscape of harmony-driven rock/pop, reggae, classic punk/funk, and garage. The Brisbanes counter their relationship-driven and often dark lyrics with upbeat, hook-laden music and a carefree stage presence that reminds many a viewer that playing music is supposed to be enjoyable, regardless of the lyrical theme. Whether it is the occasional costume dress-up, random movie song covers, t-shirt trivia, or use of inflatable props, The Brisbanes work hard to put on a show. It is not unusual at a live show to hear the band progress from a mellow, grooving reggae tune, to a driving, nasty rocker, to a disco-themed anthem, all in the span of ten minutes. A recurring theme in their work is to avoid boredom, both in repetitive aspects of music and in their stage presence. This philosophy has begun to attract the attention of the local music scene, with consistent radio play on The Homegrown Buzz, repeated bookings at popular venues, and a growing number of Briz-fans. Their debut album, “This Is Not for Fun”, was recorded earlier this year. They plan on starting their second adventure in the spring of 2007.

Along with Jeff Kinney (lead vocals, guitars), Jeff “Bowski” Cowan (bass, props), Jake Gronbeck (drums, percussion), and Chris Anderson (guitars/vocals), the recent edition of Katie Anderson (vocals/percussion), no relation to Chris, only increases the band’s creative possibilities. The attitude and purpose of the group can be summarized in a question-and-answer Cowan asks the band before every show: “You know what we get to do today?” -“We get to play rock and roll.”
