Description:
Hailing from Stevens Point, WI, Elf Lettuce is a four piece band with an eclectic sound that has evolved drastically since their inception in November of 2003. Their sound can’t be easily pinpointed, and is (for lack of a previously existing term) labeled “Cosmic Funk-a-billy Blues Rock Improv.” It’s something that’s not straight up blues, yet not quite dirty funk, not quite retro rock-a-billy, yet not futuristic or avant-garde. Their sound lies somewhere on a tangent that hovers around all these genres, and is fuelled by the driving force of improvisation. Elf Lettuce strives to perform with an exponentially increasing level of intensity. They aim to combine free-flowing jams with precisely executed original songs, pairing improvisation with composition to excite young and gracefully aging fans alike.
The group draws heavy influence from the Grateful Dead, the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Phish, but also draws upon the likes of Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, John Scofield, Steely Dan, and Bob Dylan, to name a ridiculously small quantity. The band has been influenced by musical icons, local bands, and friends far too numerous to list concisely. They continue to strive to listen to and acquire as wide a variety of music as they can in order to diversify their styles and provide something in their shows for fans of all musical genres. The young group began as a five piece playing classic rock covers but soon developed an arsenal of original music amid a few changes in personnel. Elf’s permanent lineup consists of founding members Jacob Lison (guitar, vocals), Matt Ruder (keyboards, vocals), Alex White (bass guitar, vocals) and Richard Hankison (drums, percussion). Past members have also included rhythm guitarist Chad Wolf, bassist Mike Tyler, and drummers Ryan Good and Eric Marx. The group has performed around Wisconsin and the Twin Cities, and hopes to continue to expand their performances to other venues and festivals throughout the Midwest. While the group does plan to enter the studio at some point, they haven’t set a definite recording date yet, as they want to continue to refine and develop the quality of their live concerts. As apprentices of the jam scene, members of Elf Lettuce rely on each performance as an opportunity to experiment and discover new musical ideas. And like all bands who emphasize the live performance as the best medium to strengthen the band-audience connection, Elf Lettuce greatly appreciates you, the listener, for sharing in their music and allowing the band to let loose and create something unique.
