Description:
The Name: According to Greek mythology, Atlas led twelve titans into a ten year revolt against Zeus. Eventually, Zeus overthrew them all, and Atlas’ punishment was to hold the world on his shoulders for all of eternity. Ultimately, Atlas died the horrendous death of turning to stone by Medusa. Theoretically, if one were able to resurrect Atlas, he would come back to life free of his stone form holding the Earth, and in turn, the Earth would fall, ending existence as we know it. So, Resurrecting Atlas metaphorically means “Bring the End.” The name also hails a much more personal meaning to its founding members. The idea of coming to life and being freed of the burden of “the weight of the world” on your shoulders, is the essence of which Resurrecting Atlas plans to compose themselves on a business level; with all members equally taking on the burden of doing a musical group seriously and successfully, and in essence, freeing each other.
The Band: Resurrecting Atlas was conceived in October of 2003 in Grand Rapids, MI by drummer Dave “Cooter” Koetje and guitarist Mike Hafer. Both Dave and Mike were in mildly successful metal bands respectively, (Ruin of the Poor, Until Forever, and Smash Alley Recording group Defiant Nature) but were the main driving forces in them. Coincidentally as both of their projects came to an end, they decided to try one last time together, and to do it right. Soon after, they recruited vocalist Joe Lenneman (formerly of Friction Recording group Duress) and Luke Galas (classical guitar major at Grand Rapids Community College class of ’04) on guitar. The songwriting process stemmed from there creating an intriguing mix of metal, hardcore, ambience, and melody… the likes of which most listeners haven’t ever heard. Within their first 4 months together, the band had acquired their business license through the state of Michigan, and written almost 10 songs, as well as booking shows. The group debuted on April 24th @ Clearchannel Radio Venue, The Intersection in Grand Rapids, MI with Solid State Recording artists Dead Poetic, a slew of merch, and a blistering set that left the crowd of over 300 (117 of which were made by RA’s pre-sales) stunned. Immediately after, the band was asked to return a month later with Ozzfest ’04 / Century Media Recording artists God Forbid and Trustkill recording artists Most Precious Blood. Soon after, bassist Mike McNally entered the mix, and the band has since begun booking a regional summer tour and plan to record their full length disc with Lovewar / Channelsurfers Guitarist Tim Bushong in his home recording studio in Indiana. In such a short time, major accomplishments have already been made, and nothing is seemingly standing in their way. The group has already seen offers from Fort Wayne, IN based indie-label, Smash Alley Records, but have made no commitments to anyone but themselves yet. This super-tight orchestra of urgency and fury has the perfect mix. An emotional & compelling vocalist atop a technically superb group driving the emotion to places audiences either haven’t dared or been able to reach before. Resurrecting Atlas is the common metal listener’s cure for a genre which doesn’t often leave one thinking…
