Description:
Atomic Tangerine is the Orlando-based rock quartet that has been making waves in South Florida's rock scene since its formation in 1995. Headed by lead singer and primary songwriter, Josh Snyder, the band sports a contemporary style that's equal parts classic rock and modern day pop, a breath of fresh air at a time when the music industry and charts are overrun by bubble gum one-hit wonders and pop tart corporate confections. But their sound, and their story, has not always been so easily defined.
Band Members:
Originally formed by Snyder and lead guitarist/co-songwriter Eithan (8on) Ben-Horin while in their mid-teens, the band reached almost immediate acclaim when The Miami Herald labeled them South Florida's "best youth rock alternative group." Soon, the band began playing in local rock clubs, eventually drawing the attention of Miami's Magic City Records. Citing an "untouched genuineness and raw honesty" in their music, MCR co-owner Rick Howell signed them and produced their first release, a self-titled EP which landed air play on Miami's local rock station, WZTA/94.9. In a surprising turn of events, Ralph Lauren/Polo used a cut off the record for a national advertising campaign and heightened exposure drew media attention from a number of outlets, including features in The Miami Herald and Broward County's daily, The Sun-Sentinel. Having graduated from college, two of the original members split, leaving Snyder and Ben-Horin, both whom quickly realized that Miami's dwindling love for local rock would require them to move elsewhere.
In 2000, Snyder and Ben-Horin relocated to Orlando, Florida's rock music hub, and quickly enlisted current drummer Mike Rollo and bass player Adam Kaye. The band reformed and began touring extensively, honing their craft and chemistry, slowly but surely winning over hordes of new fans. In January 2003, the band achieved a watershed moment when they won Hard Rock Cafe's 2003 national "Battle of the Bands," beating out unsigned bands from across the country. Energized by their win, the band went into the studio, have completed and are gearing up for the release of their second album, You're Knot Soul. Comprised of 11 tracks, the album eloquently captures Snyder's take on the thorniness of everyday life and the band's signature alt-rock style, punctuated by Rollo's thunderous percussion, Kaye's slick bass strumming and Ben-Horin's nimble-fingered guitar work.
In support of the album, Atomic Tangerine is embarking on an extensive Florida tour, something they've been looking forward to for some time. "Working in the studio and recording an album is wonderful," says Snyder. "However, we all love playing live. There's nothing like the energy created by a crowd that's moved by our music." Evolving beyond their garage band roots, Atomic Tangerine is a band on the cusp, a developing talent looking not just for a big break, but a life based on making music. "I don't think any of us could or would do anything else," Snyder adds. "We've all grown up with music as a constant in our lives. One way or another, it will always be there and we will always be focused on it."
