Definition: Cabbage n. A common kitchen garden vegetable, about as large and wise as a man's.......
“Screaming Radishes”..they’re not just a band, they’re a legend in “Vegetable Related Rock” -Lynn Wasson, "Entertainment Ft. Smith Magazine"
"Mr. Cabbagehead & the Screaming Radishes" is a uniquely audience focused, highly-energized redesign of roots influences, creating relevant, enduring rock 'n roll extensions of Stax, Motown, and Rhythm & Blues. This "good-times" music ensemble is based out of Fort Smith, Arkansas, USA. “Mr. Cabbage Head & the Screaming Radishes” rise to the southwest music scene began in a garage in 1984, when a group of “thirty-something” high school friends got together on a Sunday afternoon. Each of them had aspired to be “musicians” in high school in some form or fashion, but their varied lives and occupations had vanished those dreams. However, on that afternoon, being together again and remembering the old songs of the sixties and seventies, and tapping on a set of old drums and an organ that had gathered dust over the years, those dreams began to reappear.
On that Sunday afternoon, a group of friends with at least one thing still in common after all those years, began to put together a sound that has become one of the most popular music sensations in the Southwest. “The Cabbage Heads” as the band is commonly called by fans, is a 9-piece show/dance band featuring a horn section with trumpets, saxophone, trombones and flute. This is a high energy band featuring music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, specializing in private parties, class reunions, wedding receptions, company parties, etc.
The band has performed over a 7-state area - Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kansas, Missouri, and Louisiana - for the past 21 years, and has opened shows for RARE EARTH, ATLANTA RHYTHM SECTION, BOBBY “BLUE” BLAND and JAN & DEAN.
About Mr. Cabbagehead & The Screaming Radishes
Since 1984, Mr. Cabbagehead and the Screaming Radishes have been Arkansas and Oklahoma’s favorite party band. The nine piece rhythm and blues band have two albums to their credit, but like Jack Mack and the Heart Attach on the West Coast, The Boogie Kings, in the South or the Flippers in the Midwest, it is their thousands of personal appearances that fuel their loyal fans. “The Cabbageheads” as they are known by their fans are nine seasoned musicians who can play literally anything and have great time doing it. Led by founders, Bubba Carter ,Tommy Cunningham and Mr. Cabbagehead, Ricky Young, the Cabbageheads have the horn section and vocals to do favorites such as almost anything by Chicago, Delbert McClinton, The Temptations, Sam and Dave, James Brown, Billy Joel, Jackie Wilson, Tower of Power, Four Seasons, Ike and Tina Turner etc. In fact, in their younger days, many of the Cabbageheads toured with the above mentioned groups and only found each other as they thought they were entering musical semi-retirement in western Arkansas.
Today, Mr. Cabbagehead and the Screaming Radishes play a schedule of outdoor festivals, and company conventions and leave astonished listeners wondering why they’d never been to a Cabbagehead Party before. The Cabbageheads are: Steve “Bubba” Carter, Tommy Cunningham, Ricky Young, Mike Lenzini, Ronnie Thomas, Steve Clark, Larry Mathews, John Henley, and Harley Vinsant.
The band operates with a full state-of-the-art sound reinforcement sound system and theater lighting.

Accolades from some of our clients:
“We wanted to write and tell you how much we appreciate Mr. Cabbage Head coming to play for the fund-raiser in the Hangman’s Garden. You guys made it a truly magical night. Not only was the evening beautiful, the music totally wonderful and the crowd great, but we also raised right at $3,000.00. The theater has come a long way since we first acquired it and that is due to the generousity and kindness of people like you. If we may ever be of service to any of you, please do not think twice about calling us. You’re the Best!” Suzanne Horne MUSIC FORT SMITH
Just a quick letter of thanks to you and everyone in the Cabbage Head gang for helping make our Christmas party a huge success! Many have said that is was the best party they’ve ever been to. I hope that we can help the band out with the enclosed T-shirt order. Please send them to my attention here at the station. We realize how busy you are, so we wont’ expect them by New Year’s! We appreciate everything you did to make our event possible. Everyone truly enjoyed your music and I’m sure they’ll be talking about it for weeks to come! Perhaps we’ll be able to see all of you on television some day, as long as it’s on ABC! Charlotte Gunn, KLAX-ABC Pollack/Belz Communications Co., Inc. Alexandria LA
“Starlight” Benefits Hospital“ Mr. Cabbage Head and the Screaming Radishes is making a return appearance due to popular demand following its performance at the 1990 Starlight Spectacular. The Auxillary normally changed bands from year to year to keep a fresh sound. “After last year’s dance, we even got cards in the mail requesting the band for this year. That’s something we never had happen before.” The fort Smith band is known for its strong brass and woodwind section and danceable mix of classic rock from ‘50’s, ‘60’s and early ‘70’s. “Governor meets Mr. Cabbage Head” What a way to end to Arkansas Governor’s Conference on Tourism hosted by Fort Smith - and celebrate a couple of anniversaries, as well. Those attending the Governor’s Ball at the Holiday Inn Tuesday night that ended the three-day conference, which is 20 years old this year, were rocked to their socks by Mr. Cabbage Head and the Screaming Radishes - a local band celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. If you like the music from the old Stax and Motown record labels and movie soundtracks from the “Big Chill,” “ Animal House,” and “The Commitments,” you’re sure to like the showy, brassy Mr. Cabbage Head.” Linda Seubold OFFBEAT TIMES RECORD & E-Fort Smith Magazine (voted the “Most Popular Local Band of 2003”)

"How long indeed, and how many?" Mr. Cabbage Head and the Screaming Radishes may play forever. About this time last year, the editors encountered Steve "Bubba" Carter, one of the founding members of the longtime, good-time, legendary party band Mr. Cabbage Head and the Screaming Radishes. "We've got a story for you," said the genial Carter. "The Cabbage Heads are retiring, and this year will be our official World Tour and swan song. We've decided to hang it up." Marking our calendars to return to the subject in April 2002, we found the Cabbage Heads had not only retired, they have just produced a CD (their first) and had gigs lined up at fundraisers, parties, weddings and anywhere else they've been invited to play, far into the future. Why does this not surprise us? We immediately convened an interview with Carter (bass) and his longtime Cabbage Head colleague Tommy Cunningham (lead guitar). Having Ricky Young (lead singer) at the same session would have completed the trio of anchor frontmen – but he had a gig. We had planned to cover the history of the band's formation in 1984 in a northside garage by a group of 30-something-aged high school friends who had grown up playing, with various degrees of seriousness, in dozens of different local bands. Just for the record, the original members were Cunningham, Steve Carter and his brother Richard Carter, Rick Young and Rick Tinder. All had busy careers, growing families and adult responsibilities, but missed playing the old Stax soul, rock'n'roll and funk they grew up loving. Mr. Cabbage Head and the Screaming Radishes was born that day, and for the next 18 years the band became a mainstay in the local scene, playing for fun much more than money. Seem's they've never kept track of the fundraisers they've played or the money they've helped raise. But if you've been to a party for a good cause, whether in shorts or a tux, you've heard and no doubt boogied to their infectious beat. They only claim to know about 20 songs (another inside joke) but if it is true, they know the 20 tunes guaranteed to make a wallflower gator. Fourteen of them are on the CD, produced by Tom Ware of Fat Rabbit Studios in Van Buren, including soul standards they've made their own, like "634-5789," funk monsters like "Brick House," and all the best showcases for their great horn section: "Vehicle," and "Saturday in the Park." We'd hardly gotten started when we asked the question that derailed the whole interview. "How many people can legitimately claim to have been a member of the Cabbage Heads?" Carter and Cunningham burst into laughter. "Does that mean they really had to play, or does it count if they just stood there holding horns so we'd have the same number of people we put in the contract?" Carter asked. Cunningham roared "All of them! Everybody who says they played with us probably did!" Challenging us to print 'em if they could remember 'em, the two grabbed pencils and started writing, which stirred many hilarious memories, all sadly off the record. They faxed more the next day, and are no doubt still thinking of all the pick-up musicians who have shared the stage with the Cabbage Heads. For those of you who keep stats, "Rick" is the most frequently occurring name, followed by "Mike," "Steve," and "Gary." Remember, these boys were born in the '50s. Their memories are paying for the '70s, which is why they beg to be excused if they've left you off. The list is shown below. They came up with more than 40 players during the first round, and faxed more the next day. "Total of 50 members," the fax from Carter concluded. "Give us a few more days and it will be 60!!!" The editors and Cabbage Heads have decided there's only one way to settle this. I walked a long way on the earth, and I was tired. I looked for a place to rest, and found a beautiful garden. It had rich, dark dirt, and the air was warm. I decided, "This is just right!" I laid down on the earth to rest. I felt safe and secure... Then one day, something wonderful happened! I started to grow! Before I knew it, I became a purple cabbage!
I crept over to a nearby pool, and gazed at my new reflection. To my surprise, I was beautiful!
