Description:
Four years ago, Joshua Kassabian picked up a guitar to add to his extensive background of musical instruments. Almost immediately following this, Josh formed a band by the name of Walkout with some friends in their hometown of Walled Lake, Michigan in the suburbs of Detroit. With Josh as lead singer and guitarist, Walkout was best known as a hard rock/punk band with influences such as Anti-Flag, Rise Against, Alkaline Trio and NOFX. They released a demo recording in 2003 and a full-length album in August of 2004, Confessions of Fallen Souls, both were produced by Royce Nunley, former bassist and founding member of the Suicide Machines. Just before the album was to be released, the band suffered a serious setback as their bassist severed his finger, preventing them from playing any shows for at least two months. Josh decided that he would use this opportunity to work on some songs he had been writing for his own side-project from Walkout. As Josh concentrated on this new material, he came up with an idea to create a concept album that people could actually follow along with and understand the storyline. He also made a point to use only acoustic guitar along with vocals and add nothing more, no bongos, no drums, finally just guitar. After two months of writing and testing out the songs on his friends as well as many strangers, Josh finally completed everything needed for his album, thus creating Crushed Winter Afterlife. Once he got approval from all who listened, he headed to a friend’s studio and recorded two songs to use for demos. "My First Love Was Death" is from the mind of a serial killer; a mad man who is obsessed with killing those who caused him pain. The second song on the demo is "The End", which is the final song for the album and is about taking your own life to show remorse for killing others. The story behind the album is of love, loss and revenge. It starts with a nuclear blast that erases mankind, with the exception of one man and woman who believe it is their fate to be together so they fall in love. As the story moves on, the couple discovers a colonization of other survivors in an underground city. The woman, who once thought she was destined to be with this last surviving man, now desires to be with someone else. The man has trouble coming to grips with the fact that his love has left him and becomes quite irate and disturbed. He then makes it his personal vendetta to take the life of his love as well as her new lover. This concept has been titled, Tragedy’s Only Real When Bleeding and will include thirteen total tracks that will "snap your neck the same way you broke my heart". Crushed Winter Afterlife has captured attention from many genres including emo, punk and hardcore. Josh has been playing wherever he can and gaining fans on a daily basis including members of Much The Same (A-F Records) and The Mathematicians (Make Your Own Fate Records). CWA has established a new style of acoustic emo-rock with morbid twists of humor, understandable lyrics with upbeat and catchy guitar riffs and powerful vocal blends with underlying yet subtle screams. Tragedy’s Only Real When Bleeding is tentatively planned for a February 2005 release with a national tour in the works. Call it emo if you like, but this music is far more complex, dark and compassionate than any other acoustic album you’ll ever come across. Crushed Winter Afterlife is looking to turn heads, keep fans on edge and at the same time, send kids home seeing the story from a different point of view. Josh Kassabian will take acoustic music and songwriting to a whole new level in 2005.
