Description:
Socio-political awareness….. Buzzsaw guitars and electronic niceties….. A disdain for the status quo….. These are a few of Flat Atom’s favorite things.
They’ve drawn comparisons to groups such as Pigface, Ministry, Clutch, Pitchshifter, Rob Zombie, and Marilyn Manson; yet they sound like none of them. Their original take on modern rock is a matte black El Camino to pop’s chromed Mercedes. Flat Atom is the anti-pop.
The 4 members of Madison, WI-based Flat Atom are a group of American heretics, wielding a unique blend of industrial metal, goth, and hardcore as a hammer to pound their message of social and personal responsibility home. Over the course of their debut EP ‘Betwixt Four and Six’ on Rez8 Records they take on topics as diverse as unemployment (Suck On The Dollar), sexual intimacy (Amyl Nitrate), the state of politics in America (Roll Over), and morass of interpersonal relationships (Entropy). As an extra bonus, a live track from the group’s first public performance is included on the EP as well, proving that they can deliver live, as well as on their recordings. The typical Flat Atom show is a roller coaster of emotion, tension and release, and catharsis. The sets are far-ranging in style and material, even going as far as to include covers from Pigface (Suck), The Monkees (Stepping Stone), and Schnitt Acht (The War Has Begun).
Each of the members contributes in their own particular manner to the sonic whirlwind that is Flat Atom. Nick provides the hardcore-influenced vocals that purr along with The Thump’s guitar and sample work to create the fuel for the musical engine of destruction. Meanwhile, Inertia's powerful drumming ignites their mixture, adding rhythmic power to the stroke. And finally, over this amalgam Jay sprinkles filtered and delayed post-modern synthesizer flourishes that provide a familiar, yet slightly twisted touchstone. This arrangement is never static; instead Flat Atom is modular, easily rearranging its performers and instrumentation to best support the musical needs of the individual works. Expect the unexpected from Flat Atom, and you won’t be disappointed.
