Resident Scout is a solo project founded in the Fall of 2009 by Hobey Kuhn. As a senior in high school, he wrote, recorded, mixed, played and produced his first album, "My Greatest Sympathies," released July 6, 2010. Much like that of Moby and Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails, Hobey Kuhn is the only person behind the endeavors of Resident Scout, having recorded the entire album in the studio he and his brother built in 2009, entitled Outback Studios.
Resident Scout's workmanship stretches from the light and simple feel of Indie Rock, from bands like Spoon, Cold War Kids and Vampire Weekend, to the edgier, more energetic feel of 90's Alternative, Grunge, and Blues, artists like Nirvana, The White Stripes, and the Foo Fighters. “I wanted to combine the playful little ditties from the indie rock bands of today,” he says, “with the energy that the grunge bands produced in the 90's.”
Almost at once, Kuhn began a very small promotional campaign to see how his music fared in the online music community. The success of Resident Scout surely took him by surprise. The Deli Nashville had Resident Scout peaking at 13 on Nashville's Top 300 Charts, and at 2 on their Indie Rock charts, only behind Kings of Leon, and has recently nominated Resident Scout as Nashville’s Best Emerging Artist of 2010. Radio stations, such as BBC 6 Music's "Introducing" run by Tom Robinson, WUTS 91.3 FM and other college radio stations, and blogs and review sites like Culture Bully, run by Chris DeLine, and “AFG Must Rock,” run by Aron Gibson, have also picked up on Resident Scout's growing popularity, giving many of the songs shoutouts and spins. Resident Scout has also been featured in various online and print magazines, from Unpeeled to AMP.
With this encouragement, Hobey Kuhn plans to continue his endeavors, writing and recording another album hopefully by the end of the summer of 2011. Even though time is now limited because he is currently an Engineering major at the University of Michigan, he will continue to promote online, and soon enough on the road once he is able to form a full band.
