Music types: Eclectic, Alternative
Description:
The Cedar Circuit, an eclectic quartet hailing from Wilmington, NC, bridges the gaps between rock music, funk, jazz, bluegrass, and a wide variety of modern and classic influences. A no-stone-left-unturned approach leads the band to uncharted territory in the rock music landscape. A healthy backbone of original material, coupled with covers ranging from Herbie Hancock to Wilco, from Wolf Parade to the Talking Heads, audiences are treated to a musical adventure: a pot luck of tonal energy.

Band Members:
Brad Lackey - Mandolin, Guitar, Vocals

Born in Martinsville, VA, at age five Brad was playing piano and singing in the Henry County Boy’s Choir. Brad’s mother, a piano teacher and his father, a banjo picker who holds a deep appreciation for bluegrass, led to Brad’s passion for mountain music today. At age fourteen Brad began playing the guitar and by twenty was performing with several musicians in the Greensboro area. Brad’s early twenties also led to more open jam rock music. The mandolin was added three years ago and continues to be the center point of his creativity today. A pursuit of blending “traditional mountain music with sounds from outer space” is his goal. Sometimes referred to as “The Saucy Donkey” or “Burlap”, his influences include: Phish, Leftover Salmon, Frank Zappa, Hot Rize, the Yonder Mt. String Band, the Grateful Dead, Nickel Creek, Ween, Bob Marley, the Avett Brothers, Primus, Neil Young, Keller Williams, and Ricky Skaggs.

Matt Shannon - Guitar, Vocals

Matt Shannon is a 23 year old guitar player who enjoys all aspects of the musical process. Growing up in Harrisburg, PA, he was exposed to a vast variety of music that has synthesized with his own imagination to create an eclectic blend of guitar sounds and an improvisational attitude. Although the electric guitar is the primary weapon on stage, he grew up developing his playing style on acoustic guitar as a teenager. His twenties brought upon him a deeper need to explore the spheres of music, and has produced some further insight into the art of honing one’s craft. Some influences include John Scofield, the Allman Brothers, Steely Dan, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, early Chicago, the Grateful Dead, Phish, the Talking Heads, and Led Zeppelin. This is an abbreviated list, because over the years Matt has grown to accept Duke Ellington’s philosophy on music, “There’s only two kinds of music. There’s good, and there’s the other kind.”

Shelby Smith - Percussion, Samples

I grew up in the 7 cities. I’m 25 years old. I’m influenced by my surroundings, past and present. I love my family, the ocean, world culture, and music. I’ve got a need to create musically, and I do so by shaking and hitting things in patterns that please me.

Trevor Havelka - Bass

Trevor Havelka is originally from Coshocton, OH. Both of his parents are music teachers, so music has always been a part of his life. While formally trained on piano, voice, and trombone, he picked up the bass guitar while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He was a Music Synthesis major until he decided to finish his career at Berklee and take up classes in electronics. Wanting to learn how the music electronics worked and how to design them was his passion.

Trevor has played in many different types of bands, and delved into his own solo work. While at Berklee, he played bass in a hardcore punk band by the name of Futurenotpast. This is where his love of the bass guitar all started. He also played in a metal band called Absesst and wrote, produced, engineered, and performed on Potassium’s multi-genre solo album “Opposite of Lame”.

With electronic music being a large influence in his musical taste, Trevor writes and produces electronic music ranging from IDM to ambient, soundtrack to hip hop. He has recorded and performed under the names of Seizurous T and Caveman::Beta. This music can be heard at Beeps and Whistles.

Influences are by no means a complete list: The Velvet Underground, Kings of Leon, Kaiser Chiefs, Lou Reed, Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Aphex Twin, Crystal Method, Jamiroquai, Luke Vibert, The Roots, Blackalicious, Guru.
