Band Members:
The intriguing, haunting sonance of William Westgroves’ music has been evolving for over two decades—the result of a musician’s journey through a variety of styles and musical worlds.

William began studying guitar in his early childhood. During his teen years he opened himself up to the world of punk rock, heavy metal, blues and classical guitar. His passion for music kept him on a course, which eventually led to his co-founding of the Indie rock band Thorn Oil in the early 1990’s along side his childhood friend and bassist Donald Ball. His involvement with the band led him from his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina, to Boston, Massachusetts.

Though Thorn Oil broke up in 1996, William and Donald continued making music, but this time on separate courses. William focused on his guitar, practicing religiously and composing instrumental material, which later became the basis for Spiralworks.

William and Donald’s musical paths later crossed again to form the musical collaborative of Spiralworks. Donald playing cello and William on his guitar began writing instrumental music that would carry William to February of 2003 when he met his future wife and musical partner, Alfee.

Alfee Westgroves has been singing all of her life and decided she wanted to be a singer ‘when she grew up’ at the age of five, after falling hopelessly in love with rock’n’roll. Alfee continued to sing and study music throughout her adolescence in her hometown of Natchez, Mississippi and began writing her own songs. The singer moved to Boston at the age of 18 to attend Berklee College of Music in Fall 1994.

In Boston, Alfee became involved in several musical endeavors in varied styles, venues and partnerships. After a long musical hiatus, Alfee’s father requested a CD to share with a friend, Kathryn McCabe, who later requested to sell the disc in her store, Different Accents (Natchez, MS). The result was a small, mass production of Alfee’s EP, Where’s Sue Baby? and the end to her hiatus. You can learn more about Alfee at: www.alfeewest.com.

One day while William and his fiance were shopping for suitable wedding attire, they struck up a polite conversation with Cleveland Davis, the shop owner. After hearing the story of their interests and musical backgrounds Cleveland asked them to play at his fashion show. Reluctant to mix marriage and music William and Alfee began to prepare for the show solely with the intent to play “Miss Celie’s Blues” from the movie The Color Purple, and just have a good time.

That was the beginning of the magic, which is now Love’s Itch. The chemistry, which is an integral part of their love for one another, married well in their musical styles. The result is music alive with energy, emotion and variety. Love’s Itch is a down home blend of blues, jazz, classical and a little something that you just can’t put your finger on
