||They are just awesome man!
What do you get when you take local veteran musicians who love to play gutsy blues and raw rock and roll and throw them together in a band? The Better Off Band. That’s the name of one of the newest and most energetic rock and blues bands in the Wichita area. Although the band is new, the band’s members have been playing together for a number of years with the Kathy Sullivan Band until the members parted ways earlier this year.
The band plays mostly rock and blues covers that span the last 30-40 years or so, but the sets are also spiced with a few originals by Cotter and Chesney. And more original music is in the works for future shows.
The name, Better Off Band, came about as the result of a recent discussion amongst band members when someone commented that listeners of other area bands would be “better off” if they came to listen to the newly formed group of Chesney, Taylor, DeBoer, and Cotter. The four have been playing locally for the past several weeks under names such as Steve Cotter and Friends or Kelley Chesney and Friends, but now the group has an identity … and a website: http://www.betteroffband.com. Please visit the site for information on the band, including show dates and times, news, song lists, audio and visual clips, and a gallery of photos of not only the band, but also special guest musicians and friends.
You’re better off listening to the Better Off Band!

Kelley Chesney (guitar, vocals) is a former member of Crimson Rose, an area band that played hard charging rock and roll. He brings to the table not only his sizzling energy and enthusiasm, but also his great fret-board skills recently featured in the Guitar Wars at the Port of Wichita.
Jeff Taylor (bass, vocals) provides the backbone for the band. His thumping, hard charging bass not only makes up half of the rhythm section for the band, but also provides a catalyst around which the band’s energy flows.
Dan DeBoer (drums, vocals) keeps the beat and provides just enough chaos to make things interesting. He is a former member of several Midwest bands, including Catalyst and Medusa.
Steve Cotter (guitar, vocals) brings a powerful, hard driving sound on guitar that compliments Chesney’s guitar perfectly. And his top-notch skill level and unique tones make him more than just the “other” guitarist in the band. Cotter is also the group’s soundman making sure all the band’s individual skills shine as a team.
