||I don't know what show you saw, but I caught them at the Red Carpet and they rocked, for a girl band. I think they sing well, play well and it's great to see a female dimension to music. The plaid skirts are hot, and I don't think they are like Britney at all, all their songs are down to earth and real.
Where can you find hot college girls who can rock it out? Over the past year and a half four talented women have put forth the effort to creating a new sound in alternative pop/rock. The current Catholic School Girls are three of the original members of the band, which formed in January 2003, plus one.
The original band was a mostly acoustic act composed of present members MaryBeth Gleason (lead vocals/guitar), Janel Goenner (vocals/guitar) and Kari Ness (drums). All three attended an all girl, catholic college, in St. Joseph, MN. The loss of two members to study abroad programs forced The Catholic School Girls to change their instrumentation and style.
The Catholic School Girls found musician and friend, Elizabeth "Shanequa" Malaktaris to play keyboards. The loss of The Catholic School Girl's bass player put Shanequa learning The Catholic School Girls tunes with bass.
The Catholic School Girls have broken into the Minneapolis, St. Cloud and Fargo areas. Playing venues such as The Red Carpet, The Urban Wildlife Club, 4th Street, AM Lounge, The Java Joint, Babb’s Coffee House and many more.
The Catholic School Girls have shared the stage with local bands and musicians such as Harbor, Podland, Look-Alive, The Maladies, Billie Johnson’s Roadshow, Sneaker 2 Bombs, The Contest, The Richard, Lovestruck, Mieka Pauly and Brenda Weiler.
The Catholic School Girls’ track “Honey” was featured on CSB/SJU’s 2004 Campus Groove CD, which featured campus and local bands. The Catholic School Girls’ track “Good Girl” was also featured on CentralMNRock.com's 2004 Local Artist Compilation CD.
With new instrumentation, the Catholic School Girls decided to move in a new direction to appeal to a wider audience. The Catholic School Girls bring music together that is refreshing and different. They consider their music un-classifiable. Every song is an extension of the band's souls and minds. Together they are a talented source of female musicianship and style. Yet, despite the changes, The Catholic School Girls remain true to their plaid skirt-wearing tradition.
