Universal-BMG merger anti-trust concerns OR why stay indie

by John Fitzgerald, Founder, Local Band Network

The EU is allowing the proposed Universal-BMG merger to continue moving forward. This combination of numbers 3 and 4 in the music industry will result in Universal being number 2 worldwide with a 22 percent share of music publishing. That's not really what interested me about the whole thing. What I find interesting is that they are escaping scrutiny by selling off whole catalogs of copyrights including performance and print rights. Keep that in mind when you are thinking about signing with a major label. You really never know who's going to end up owning the music you slaved to write and perform. Yet another reason to stay indie in my opinion.

Comments welcome
