Band leader Bill Overton and several other original members of His Word helped start the GTY Praise Band in 1998. They led music for youth activities and began leading worship for the contemporary service at St. Anne of Grace Episcopal Church. In 2001 Bill and several members of the praise band formed His Word and began touring with St. Anne's youth group, Grace to Youth. They started becoming more of a rock band, and in late 2002 the transition was complete with the addition of drummer Mike Tunnell.

Early 2006 brought many changes for His Word. After graduating college, Bill left the band to start a career and a family in North Carolina. Brian Overton became the principal singer for His Word, and the band also saw the additions of vocalist Krista Slicker and percussionist/drummer Omar Renderos. The "new" band had a different sound, but the same heart for worship that His Word has always had.

Since then His Word has been playing concerts, conferences, and retreats in southwest Florida and other areas throughout the state. They hope to expand their reach throughout the southeastern US. His Word's goal is to make every event they play a worship experience, not just a concert.
