Music types: Electronic, Pop
Description:
The band Wedlock is an electronic indie outfit hailing from Richmond, VA. Formed in 2004, They began as a collaboration between programmer Jeff Hathaway and singer-song writer Paul Allgood. Despite owing to several influences, ranging from the American new wave of the Cars to the electro-cabaret of Soft Cell, the quest for an original sound was never abandoned. This quest was especially continued by Allgood in the face of constantly changing membership.

Their debut EP Matrimony was released in 2006 by Kounterfeit Records. It lived on a steady diet of 4/4 bass drum pulse mixed with the occasional glimmering synth and its bisexually themed standout“Cuts Both Ways.” The release of "Discopharma", a John Morand produced single, marked the end of the working relationship of Allgood and Hathaway as Wedlock.

Once was settled in North Carolina, Allgood put together a live band consisting of keyboardist Jonathan Kidder, bassist Kirk Bryson, and Guatemalan drummer David Mendez. The drummer was quickly replaced by Greg Klaiber, also of Grabass Revue, who served as an interim until being replaced by Ana Mitchell. Despite the lingering doubt that surrounded the band, Allgood, along with Bryson and Kidder somehow managed to release Exogamy in April of 2008.

The initial response to the album was mediocre. However,by spring of the following year they began gaining some commercial ground with singles such as "Reverend Charisma" which highlighted the 1978 People's Temple murder-suicides. The other single of note was "Black Sundress" as it reached #9 for mp3 downloads on Amazon.com. Thanks to its “hard hitting lyrics” and “refreshing musicianship”, Exogamy was able to enter the GLBT top 40 chart at Out-voice, peaking at the #8 position.

The band took it's next cue from Action Action with its 2009 follow up Continuity. True to form, it came with an entirely new group of personnel consisting of Allgood, Baxter Smith (keys),and Lee Whitsel (bass). They finished as runners up in the Indie Band of The Year competition at Music Emissions, a Canadian e-zine, and the album garnered overall solid reviews.

2010 Marked the potential end of Wedlock as Allgood, Smith, and Whitsel could barely maintain long enough to produce the Blameless EP for Richmond singer Bryanna Rain. Their own Witnesses EP showed up in August, but Allgood had since moved on to form Celadon Candy with multi-instrumentalist Jason Bowden several months prior to its release. The band is currently on extended hiatus.
