Description:
By standard definitions, The Awkward Romance's music is too energetic to be emo, too mature to be pop-punk, too catchy to not be pop, and has too obvious of a mass appeal to be indie rock. So, instead of choosing one genre, they set out simply to write the best songs that they can, regardless of genre. The result is powerful, high-energy songs with poetic lyrics, clever guitar work and impassioned melodies. Although one critic said that they "Artfully bring together the clever songcrafting of indie rock, the melodic sensibilities of pop-rock, the energy of pop-punk, and the passion of screamo", they would much rather avoid labels altogether, and instead have people focus solely on the music and the ministry. Touring, negotiating record contracts, creating a loyal fan-base, playing over 50 shows within 6 months, recording, and releasing a full-length Cd are things that most young, unsigned bands have only on their wish lists.
The Awkward Romance did all of them in their first six months. This is due not only to their talent, but also to their tireless work ethic and a complete dedication of their band to God. The members of The Awkward Romance have learned that being in a band isn't about laying back and waiting for great things to happen, but by pouring your heart and passion into the ministry and making great things happen. The members personally handle everything relating to the band, from graphic design to booking.
That is not the only area where the Awkward Romance is different from most. Even the songwriting process for the band is atypical. Unlike most bands, where one or two members become the primary songwriters, and dole out the parts to be played by the other members, in The Awkward Romance, everyone writes lyrics, everyone writes songs, and there is complete creative freedom. This freedom has led to the marriage of different styles of music to ultimately create the unique set of songs on their debut album, Covington. Covington is a strong first effort for this band, filled with beautiful melodies, poetic lyrics, and emotional moments in its entirety, and is sure to become a must-have for the Christian rock community. Written and recorded between September 2003 and February 2004, the album is already drawing critical acclaim and creating a buzz among music fans everywhere. They are not stopping there, however. They are continually writing more songs and perfecting their art, and will shortly be going into Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee to record a new demo to shop to record labels.
Thanks to their unique songwriting and energetic live show, they recently took home second place at Christian talent search "LIME 2004" in Memphis, Tennessee and played at Cornerstone Festival in Florida, along with bands such as Switchfoot and Relient K. Additionally, they will be touring extensively this year. All of this, however, is only the beginning, and it will be exciting to see what the future holds for The Awkward Romance, be sure that you hang on for the ride.
