Description:
Defined Perception has become one of Southern Illinois' favorite bands in the relatively short two years they have been a group. Fans in the band's hometown of Carbondale, IL have been dancing the night away at crowded performances. The group has frequently been playing local venues such as Big Boys Q’n, Booby’s Beer Garden, Hangar 9, PK’s, and Tres Hombres. DP (Defined Perception) has also performed at three festivals at the largest venue in Southern Illinois, The Shawnee Natural Amphitheater. At the first two events they shared the stage with larger regional acts such as Cornmeal, The Station and Fusion Blue. At the most recent cave event Vince Herman of national touring act Leftover Salmon headlined with friends Alabaster Brown on Friday night. The following night DP headlined performing Pink Floyd's entire Animals album before playing a full set of originals. The show was set to a spectacular display of lasers and intelligent lights by iLevel Production Company. Before all three previously mentioned events, DP was invited to play live acoustic sets in the radio studio of WDBX 91.1 FM to promote the festival. The guys have been asked to play again at Cavestock III this fall. The band says they cannot be categorized into a specific rock genre. An article in the Nightlife Entertainment newspaper--of which DP was also on the cover of--has come closest to describing their music, when they dubbed the band “progressive art rock”(26 Jan. 2006 ed). The quintet draws from a variety of genres such as rock, funk, nugrass, reggae, Latin, techno, and jazz to create their fusion of music. Along with their extremely well written and complex original material, DP uses the diversity of its member's individual styles to explode into a frenzy of improvisational grooves comprised of screaming guitar solos, raging organ, pianos and synths, drum circle-like percussion and funk/punk driven bass. During live performances DP works familiar melodies from classic hit songs and film into their own jams and originals. They have been known to perform cover songs sometimes as medleys, finding common themes between different tunes and creating a symphony out of barroom hits. The band owns their own P.A., sound reinforcement, and semi-professional lighting. The group regularly plays four-hour triple set shows.
