Description:
War. Betrayal. Destruction. These themes are common in music lyrics, but when coupled with strong metal-core music, they create the unique and powerful listening experience that is Silent Mourning. Based in Hartford, Connecticut, Silent Mourning is: Rick Haas (guitar); Jay Dufour (drums/effects); Ron Giantonio (guitar); Steve Alvarez (vocals). The band members’ diverse backgrounds come together to create a unique metal-core sound, with fast aggressive guitar riffs and drumming complemented by harmonized riffs, fast drops in beat and timing, breakdowns and strong vocals. Influenced by bands like Pantera, Mudvayne, Killswitch Engage, Unearth, 18 Visions and Poison the Well, Silent Mourning’s music constantly changes, leaving audiences energized and captivated. Silent Mourning came together in 2004. Haas had previously played in a hardcore band and was looking for a group with the same musical background. He met Dufour, and the duo wrote a song. As fate would have it, Giantonio was also looking for a group. Though he had performed with only death metal groups in the past, within one hour, he had learned the song Haas and Dufour wrote and was adding his own touches to the music. With the band complete, the three quickly wrote five songs. But an integral part was missing – a singer with a wide range of vocals who could perfectly complement the group’s unique metal-core sound. Enter Alvarez. Having just finished military service, Alvarez was anxious to try something new. After hearing Alvarez belt out a song, the group knew Silent Mourning was complete. Since then, Alvarez has written the lyrics to the five songs the group had developed, as well as the additional four Silent Mourning has created since Alvarez’s arrival, rounding out a complete set.
