Description:
IPA started in a basement within the suburban sprawl of southeastern Pennsylvania in the summer of 2002 (MMII.) This ambitious musical endeavor was the brainchild of Matt "Curly" Claypotch and Dan "Sugarfly" Gardner. The original lineup consisted of Dan on guitar, Matt on saxophone and vocals, Eric "Venus Fly Trap" Brittingham on sax, Kris "I Spell My Name Funny" Weidner on trumpet, Joe "Mother Jones" Perry on piano, Jay "Charley" Dechant on bass, Dan "Blazing Triumph" Twiford on drums, and Ben "The Diarrhea Crusader" Wong on pineapple . About a month or so later, Dave "I Love Milk" Croushore (he really hates milk, so does Joe, by the way) joined the band on trombone. After about another month, Dave invited his friend Matt "I'm In 14 Other Bands, All Of Which Being Better Than This One" Wells to replace Dan Twiford on drums. The band existed in this state through the summer, with most of the above mentioned members not showing up to anything due to prior commitments, such as watching TV. Those who did participate played at various parties and get- togethers. After several weeks of not returning phone calls or e-mails, Matt Wells officially quit the band, which at this point really consisted only of Matt Claypotch, Dan Gardner, Ben, Eric, and Dave. Dan Twiford, who had been filling in for Matt Wells for most of the summer anyway, rejoined the posse. Oh yea, at one point, I can’t remember exactly when, Trevor "I Live In A Big House" Seufer joined on guitar/bass. He was loosely involved for a while before becoming more involved with George's Anatomy. Through the marching season of 2002 (MMII), the members of IPA were too busy fretting over IA visual scores to progress as a rock experience. Dave was still involved with IPA as much as he could be, but his other musical endeavors eventually took control. In November of 2002 (Novembris MMII) the band got back to work, this time with a sense of drive and commitment. At this point, the working members of IPA were Dan Gardner, Dan Twiford, Matt Claypotch, and Eric Brittingham. A garage band to the fullest extent, fun times were had rocking out and breaking stuff in Eric’s basement. It was in this period that the band actually performed a complete set of songs to an audience of real people, who kind of actually liked it. In January of 2003 (Januarius MMIII), Chris "G-String" Garofolo was recruited on sousaphone, but he ended up playing bass guitar. Jay Dechant became involved again on a couple of occasions, playing trumpet this time. Although IPA now had a solid rock band lineup and feel, the groups founders, Matt and Dan, still wanted the band to have a serious brass presence. Consequently, Mike "Ninja Warrior" Young and Andy "Wild Dinosaur" Lynn were recruited on trumpet and trombone, respectively, but time would tell if they would be full time members of IPA. As it turns out, they didn't. Also, Chris Garofolo became increasingly distant with IPA and eventually stopped being considered a member of the band. As the school year of 2003 (Spring-Fordius MMIII) the remaining members (again consisting of Gardner, Twiford, Brittingham, and Potch the Destroyer) struggled to produce something to show for the band's now one year existence. With the help of one microphone and a four track recorder, the Brittingham basement became a recording studio, where six tracks (decent sounding for the "ghetto" setup used) were eventually churned out. These six tracks became IPA's first real release, an EP entitled Don't Pet tha Flamingos. This EP journeyed (along with Danny G, Matt, and B-Ham) over the waters of the Atlantic to face the sights and sounds of Europe. It was presented to those traveling with D-Gar and company, and produced surprisingly good feedback (the expected reaction being "I need a shower to wash this musical filth off of my previously pure temple of consciousness, oh no the dirt is not coming off, what have you done to me, what have you done?!") As we only got that reaction once (and it was from Eric), Dan and Matt were encouraged. After a return from Europe, the IPA gained a new member (huh huh, member) in the form of Joe "Malcolm" Stephenson on trombone. Mr. Joseph has been a valuable gain as he has proven loyal and the band has improved a great deal. Thus, recording has begun on IPA's first full length album (with vastly improved recording equipment.). Stay Tuned for more developments.
