The story of Last Years Losers begins where most dreams of rock stardom originate: Littleton, Colorado. The year was 2001. Brandon Gishwiller, a down on his luck songwriter/guitarist, discovered that good friend Chad Gilbert, drummer/drinking buddy, shared a passion for edgy punk music. “We decided to start a band because we had played before, and music was our life,” Brandon explains. After a couple of casual practices, Chad found that it was easier to look cool while playing the bass, and with that the twosome began their online search for a new drummer, a lead singer and a second guitarist.
Enter Jason Reale, a goofy kid with years of drumming experience and a roomy basement. Jason’s passion for music was evident from the start. “I play music to get away from everything else,” he says. “It’s like a vacation every Wednesday and Sunday we practice.” With a drummer locked down, the guys set out to find a lead singer. After being acoustically assailed by a dozen lead singers, the guys decided Brandon’s vocals were more bearable than auditioning potential lead singers. “One guy said he was classically trained, but it sounded as if he were singing backwards. It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard,” Chad recalls.
After trying out dozens of Colorado's less talented lead guitarists, Last Years Losers was finalized in late 2003 with the addition of Chris/Max, a seasoned ax-slinger in the Denver scene. In the months that followed, LYL released their debut EP, Lack of Interest, and went on to win the Denver Hard Rock Cafe Battle of the Bands in July 2004. It's hard to believe that in less than a year LYL went up against some of Denver's finest and won in front of a sold out crowd.
With their winnings from the Hard Rock, LYL invested in various merchandise ranging from T-shirts and stickers to custom LYL fortune cookies. LYL then went out on an aggressive promotional campaign to further increase their fan base. In August, Chris and Chad hit the road as crewmembers to help local band D.O.R.K finish up their last leg on the 2004 Warped Tour. Upon return, LYL had even bigger motivation to work harder as a band. In the months that followed, LYL played some of Denver's biggest venues including the Gothic Theater, Soiled Dove, Oriental Theatre, and Larimer Lounge.
LYL recently recorded their first full-length album, Forgive Me Father...For I Have Rocked, which is set for release in Spring 2005. The album brings out LYL's unique sound of Dark-Pop, which comprises of powerful vocals with macabre lyrics, rock solid rhythms, and behind-the-head guitar solos that aren't cheap imitations of Metallica. During this time, LYL recorded their first video for 'Beneath the Ashes', which showcases their warped but enjoyable sense of humor and live footage of their shows.
However, LYL experienced their first tragedy as a band on their first tour to South-by-Southwest in Austin, TX in March 2005. After hitting a patch of black ice on Route 287 outside of Amarillo, their trustworthy Silverado and Trailer were totaled in mere seconds. Luckily, no major injuries were sustained. LYL then did what any near-death survivor would do, chronicle their dilemma by making a music video for 'Below Me' detailing their unplanned Amarillo vacation. Shaken, but not broken, LYL continues as a band stronger than ever.
